by Michael Faber
US & UK Release Date: July 1, 2010
SYNOPSIS: Gripping from the first page, this immense novel is an intoxicating and deeply satisfying read. Faber's most ambitious fictional creation yet, it is sure to affirm his position as one of the most talented and brilliant writers working in the UK. Sugar, an alluring, nineteen-year-old whore in the brothel of the terrifying Mrs Castaway, yearns for a better life. Her ascent through the strata of 1870's London society offers us intimacy with a host of loveable, maddening and superbly realised characters. At the heart of this panoramic, multi-layered narrative is the compelling struggle of a young woman to lift her body and soul out of the gutter. The Crimson Petal and the White is a big, juicy, must-read of a novel that will delight, enthral, provoke and entertain young and old, male and female.

Isn't it amazing what a new cover cando to a book???
ReplyDeleteNever read it when first came out but now I may just try it...
Thanks Amy!!!
That is a great cover for the book. Perfect!
ReplyDeleteI actually have the original hardcover sitting on my shelf. Unfortunately after all these years I still have not read it! I prefer the original cover more then this one...that's actually why I bought it in the first place.
ReplyDeleteThis is actually a hilarious post for me because I had the book in hardcover and then finally settled down to read it a few years ago and HATED it. I think I got through about 150 pages and was just so disengaged that I couldn't imagine sitting with it for another 600 pages...
ReplyDeleteI also prefer the original cover. Like Muse, that was what attracted me to it initially. I've owned it for several years and I'm FINALLY going to read it this year for one of my historical fiction challenges!
ReplyDeleteNot sure I'm digging this. The cover with the apple and the bed was beautiful; I'm rather partial to that one.
ReplyDeleteI loved this book and have the hardcover on my keeper shelf. The new cover is very nice as well. Glad to hear that this was one of your favorites as well!
ReplyDeleteWhoa! That is quite the cover! I absolutely loved this book as well. It's one I could easily reread.
ReplyDeleteAnother must read. I need to cultivate more historical fiction readers at our library so they will order all these wonderful books you review.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, I kind of like the old cover... come on, it's crimson colored, lol!
