02_Doctor Margaret in Delhi_Cover

Pub Date: May 5, 2015 | Historical Novels Publishing | Formats: eBook, Paperback | 308p

Series: The Azadi Trilogy
Genre: Historical Fiction

Doctor Margaret in Delhi is Book 2 of The Azadi Series and a sequel to, Book 1: Doctor Margaret's Sea Chest. This historical fiction novel continues with Margaret's journey from the time she and her Canadian husband participated in the 1854 Crimean War.

Doctor Margaret travels alone to India to be with her parents at the American Presbyterian Mission at Futtehgurh, and then on to her posting at a hospital in Delhi. There she has to not only overcome work pressures, but also deal with her intimidators and intrigues of the Mughals, at the Delhi Red Fort.

Margaret's tormenter since her childhood, Captain Albert, also joins a British regiment bound for service in India. The Russian, Captain Count Nicholai, whom Margaret had met in Crimea, also arrives in India under the guise of a French physician. The events leading up to the Indian Mutiny/Rebellion that breaks out in 1857 profoundly affect not only Margaret's life, but also of those who love her and others’ who wish her harm. Also, mixed-up in the bedlam is one of the Delhi King, Shah Zafar’s, Red Fort’s Guards sepoys, Sharif Khan Bhadur, the grandfather of Doctor Wallidad, an American doctor.

The Azadi Series covers the exciting events and turmoil that enflamed India from 1857 to 1947, and led to her independence. Those incidences engulf the characters of this story at that time, and then later their descendant's lives, again in the 1960s.

Praise for Doctor Margaret in Delhi

"An engaging continuation of a historically accurate, emotionally riveting trilogy." - Kirkus Reviews

"I have both traveled extensively in India, as well as have researched both past- and present-day India. I found this novel to be not only entertaining, but quite accurate in its portrayal of a highly complex and constantly evolving country. Margaret is an impressive heroine who must navigate this landscape, and deal with men who don't have her bests interests at heart. I would definitely recommend this well-written novel. I learned from it, and I enjoyed it." - 5-star Amazon review by Read More Books

"Excellent historical fictional setting, voice and tone. Not my normal reading diet, but your voice is compelling. Overall impression: it seems to be a novel one may settle into and relax for a delightful journey--(Spoiler alert) with a cobra and lots of new Indian vocabulary in store. Interesting bit about Robert Clive and the East India Company. Seems it's a story that should be told." - J.T.Bleu

03_Waheed RabbaniAbout the Author

Waheed Rabbani was born in India, close to Delhi, and was introduced to Victorian and other English novels, at a very young age, in his father’s library. Waheed attended St. Patrick’s High School in Karachi, Pakistan. He graduated from Loughborough University, Leicestershire, England, and received a Master’s degree from Concordia University, Montreal, Canada. While an engineer by profession, Waheed’s other love is reading and writing English literature, which led him to obtain a Certificate in Creative Writing from McMaster University and start on his fiction writing journey.

Waheed and his wife, Alexandra, are now settled on the shores of Lake Ontario in the historic town of Grimsby. More information is available on his website.

Interview & Giveaway: Marci Jefferson, author of Enchantress of Paris

Hello lovely readers! Today I have an interview with the fabulous Marci Jefferson about her latest release, Enchantress of Paris: A Novel of the Sun King's Court, and a chance for two of you to win a copy of the book, or a costume diamond bracelet!

03_Marci Jefferson

To begin, can you tell us a little about yourself and your novel, Enchantress of Paris?

Growing up in an Air Force family took Marci around the world, but her passion for history sparked while living in Yorktown, Virginia, where locals still share Revolutionary War tales. Years after graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University, immersing herself in a Quality Assurance nursing career, and then having children, she realized she'd neglected her love of writing. She now pens novels about historical women who dared to defy powerful men. She resides in the Midwest with her husband and two young children in a house full of books and toys. ENCHANTRESS OF PARIS is her second novel.

The alignment of the stars at Marie Mancini’s birth warned that although she would be gifted at divination, she was destined to disgrace her family. Ignoring the dark warnings of his sister and astrologers, Cardinal Mazarin brings his niece to the French court, where the forbidden occult arts thrive in secret. In France, Marie learns her uncle has become the power behind the throne by using her sister Olympia to hold the Sun King, Louis XIV, in thrall.

Desperate to avoid her mother’s dying wish that she spend her life in a convent, Marie burns her grimoire, trading Italian superstitions for polite sophistication. But as her star rises, King Louis becomes enchanted by Marie’s charm. Sensing a chance to grasp even greater glory, Cardinal Mazarin pits the sisters against each other, showering Marie with diamonds and silks in exchange for bending King Louis to his will.

Disgusted by Mazarin’s ruthlessness, Marie rebels. She sacrifices everything, but exposing Mazarin’s deepest secret threatens to tear France apart. When even King Louis’s love fails to protect Marie, she must summon her forbidden powers of divination to shield her family, protect France, and help the Sun King fulfill his destiny.

What inspired you to write Enchantress of Paris?

I actually learned about Marie Mancini while I was doing research for GIRL ON THE GOLDEN COIN. In most sources she is mentioned as King Louis’ first love, someone he might have married if not for his duty to his country. But a deeper study revealed a story far more complex. Her affair with the king helped shape him as a leader, and her choice to leave him is one of the greatest acts of self-respect I’ve seen in a historical figure.

What was the hardest scene to write?

The scene where Marie is forced to leave the king, watching the king chose to obey Cardinal Mazarin’s edicts rather than his own heart. She knew she had lost the king, lost the battle for France, and was about to lose her own freedom.

What was your favorite scene to write?

The scene where Marie casts a magic circle to conjure the forces of heaven to help her decide whether to elope with King Louis and cause a war, or let him go and leave herself broken hearted. I gave Marie a copy of Peter de Abano’s Heptameron, a forbidden grimoire used centuries ago for conjuring angels, to use as a guide.

What do you want readers to take away from Enchantress of Paris?

In an age where women had few rights, Marie valued her personal liberty and felt she was worthy of respect. She fought nobly for her freedom and made herself heard. We take our rights for granted today, but some of us still face these struggles in our personal lives. I hope Marie is an inspiration.

What appeals to you most about writing in the historical fiction genre?

Historical fiction is an opportunity for amateur historians like myself to answer the questions about things we cannot know. Why did people act as they did, how did they feel? Most of history was written by powerful men, and I tend to enjoy writing about the women who dared to oppose them. Fiction is an opportunity to highlight a lesser-known figure’s point of view on history.

Who are your writing inspirations?

Margaret George, Michelle Moran, Tracy Chevalier, Alice Hoffman.

What was the first historical novel you read?

The first historical biography I read was The Other Boleyn Girl. It changed the way I viewed historical fiction forever.

What is the last historical novel you read?

I was fortunate enough to snag a signed copy of PLAGUE by CC Humphreys at the Historical Novel Society conference in Denver last month (as you know, that was one memorable conference!). This award winning novel is set in Restoration England, and it’s nonstop thrills! Plus, Frances Stuart (also known as the GIRL ON THE GOLDEN COIN) makes an appearance!

What historical time period do you gravitate towards the most with your personal reading?

My favorite historicals tend to be biographical. I really love all fiction, not just historical, and it would be too hard to chose a period! I don’t think I could chose a favorite genre, either!

If there was a soundtrack for your novel, what songs might we find on it?

I’m so glad you asked this question! The touching rendition of Say Something with A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera speaks to the soul of ENCHANTRESS OF PARIS. Every word, every note, could fill Marie and King Louis’ hearts. In the book they beg each other to let love be enough to change the world. They, like anyone who hears this haunting song, left each other profoundly changed. But, of course, lots of other songs suit the book, too....

Say Something - A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera
Rude (Marry That Girl) - MAGIC!
Every Little Thing She Does is Magic - The Police
The Heart Wants What it Wants - Selena Gomez
That Old Black Magic - Frank Sinatra
Who Loves The Sun - Velvet Underground
We’re Not Gonna Take it - Twisted Sister
I Won’t Back Down - Tom Petty
Stardust - Harry Connick Jr
Shining Star - Earth, Wind, and Fire
Witchy Woman - The Eagles
Venus - Bananarama
Wandering Stars - Portishead
When I Ruled the World - Coldplay

“Told with vivid historical detail and packed with court intrigue, this is sure to please fans of royal fiction.” — Library Journal

About the Author

Years after graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University, immersing herself in a Quality Assurance nursing career, and then having children, Marci realized she’d neglected her passion for history and writing. She began traveling, writing along the way, delving into various bits of history that caught her fancy. The plot for GIRL ON THE GOLDEN COIN evolved slowly after a trip to London, where she first learned about the Stuart royals. Marci is a member of the Historical Novel Society. She resides in the Midwest with her husband, making hair-bows for their daughter, trying not to step on their son’s Legos, and teaching a tiny Pacific Parrotlet to talk.

03_Regan WalkerABOUT THE AUTHOR

Bestselling author Regan Walker loved to write stories as a child, particularly those about adventure-loving girls, but by the time she got to college more serious pursuits took priority. One of her professors encouraged her to pursue the profession of law, which she did. Years of serving clients in private practice and several stints in high levels of government gave her a love of international travel and a feel for the demands of the “Crown” on its subjects. Hence her romance novels often involve a demanding sovereign who taps his subjects for “special assignments.” And in each of her novels, there is always real history and real historic figures. Regan lives in San Diego with her golden retriever, Link, whom she says inspires her every day to relax and smell the roses. For more information please visit Regan Walker’s website and blog. NAKED: A NOVEL OF LADY GODIVA by ELIZA REDGOLD

Publication Date: July 14, 2015 | Publisher: St. Martin's Press | Formats: Ebook, Paperback | Pages: 320

Genre: Historical Fiction

Add to GR Button

We know her name. We know of her naked ride. We don't know her true story.

We all know the legend of Lady Godiva, who famously rode naked through the streets of Coventry, covered only by her long, flowing hair. So the story goes, she begged her husband Lord Leofric of Mercia to lift a high tax on her people, who would starve if forced to pay. Lord Leofric demanded a forfeit: that Godiva ride naked on horseback through the town. There are various endings to Godiva's ride, that all the people of Coventry closed their doors and refused to look upon their liege lady (except for 'peeping Tom') and that her husband, in remorse, lifted the tax.

Naked is an original version of Godiva's tale with a twist that may be closer to the truth: by the end of his life Leofric had fallen deeply in love with Lady Godiva. A tale of legendary courage and extraordinary passion, Naked brings an epic story new voice.

ADVANCE PRAISE

"Redgold's variation on this enticing legend is often lyrical and offers a satisfying blend of history, lore, and romance." (Booklist)

"Breathes new life into the story of the woman who would stop at nothing to protect her land and people." (Romantic Times)

"NAKED delivers far more than the famous ride of Lady Godiva. It's a beautifully woven story of love, loyalty, and the determination of a young woman trying to protect her people and their way of life, no matter the price. Godiva is a wonderfully strong woman in an age of dangerous men, and in NAKED, she certainly meets her match!" (Amalia Carosella, author of HELEN OF SPARTA)

"A wonderful, romantic retelling of the Lady Godiva legend. There is the colorful Anglo-Saxon backdrop, warriors, battles, peacemaking, desire, revenge and love - everything a fan of medieval romance could desire - plus a strong-willed heroin. Written with a lyrical lilt to her prose, Redgold adds realism to the myth and love to the lusty tale, allowing readers a glimpse into what might have been." (RT Book Reviews)

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Giveaway: Maud's Line by Margaret Verble

Happy Friday, all! Today I have a chance for one of you to win a fabulous new historical novel, Maud's Line by Margaret Verble!

02_Maud's Line_Cover

Publication Date: July 14, 2015 | Houghton Mifflin Harcourt | Formats: eBook, Hardcover
ISBN-10: 0544470192 | Pages: 304

Genre: Historical Fiction

A debut novel chronicling the life and loves of a headstrong, earthy, and magnetic heroine

Eastern Oklahoma, 1928. Eighteen-year-old Maud Nail lives with her rogue father and sensitive brother on one of the allotments parceled out by the U.S. Government to the Cherokees when their land was confiscated for Oklahoma’s statehood. Maud’s days are filled with hard work and simple pleasures, but often marked by violence and tragedy, a fact that she accepts with determined practicality. Her prospects for a better life are slim, but when a newcomer with good looks and books rides down her section line, she takes notice. Soon she finds herself facing a series of high-stakes decisions that will determine her future and those of her loved ones.

Maud’s Line is accessible, sensuous, and vivid. It will sit on the bookshelf alongside novels by Jim Harrison, Louise Erdrich, Sherman Alexie, and other beloved chroniclers of the American West and its people.

PRAISE FOR MAUD'S LINE

"Maud is refreshingly open and honest about her own sexuality though conscious of her place as a woman in a sexist society, always careful not to insult the intelligence or manhood of her male friends and relations. Verble writes in a simple style that matches the hardscrabble setting and plainspoken characters. Verble, herself a member of the Cherokee Nation, tells a compelling story peopled with flawed yet sympathetic characters, sharing insights into Cherokee society on the parcels of land allotted to them after the Trail of Tears." —Kirkus

“Writing as though Daniel Woodrell nods over one shoulder and the spirit of Willa Cather over the other, Margaret Verble gives us Maud, a gun-toting, book-loving, dream-chasing young woman whose often agonizing dilemmas can only be countered by sheer strength of heart.” —Malcolm Brooks, author of Painted Horses

"I want to live with Maud in a little farm in a little valley under the shadow of a mountain wall. Maud's Line is an absolutely wonderful novel and Margaret Verble can drop you from great heights and still easily pick you up. I will read anything she writes, with enthusiasm.” —Jim Harrison, author of Dalva, Legends of the Fall, and The Big Seven

“Margaret Verble gives us a gorgeous window onto the Cherokee world in Oklahoma, 1927. Verble’s voice is utterly authentic, tender and funny, vivid and smart, and she creates a living community – the Nail family, Maud herself, her father, Mustard, and brother, Lovely, and the brothers Blue and Early, the quiet, tender-mouthed mare Leaf, and the big landscape of the bottoms – the land given to the Cherokees after the Trail of Tears. Beyond the allotments, it opens up into the wild, which is more or less what Verble does with this narrative. A wonderful debut novel.” —Roxana Robinson, author of Sparta

03_Margaret VerbleABOUT THE AUTHOR

MARGARET VERBLE, an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, has set her novel on her family's allotment land. She currently lives in Lexington, Kentucky, and Old Windsor, England.

Money. Family. Love. Hate. Obsession. Duty. Politics. Religion - or the lack thereof. Sex -- or, once again, the lack thereof.

Thomas Baldwin finds himself married to a woman he can’t stand, while head-over heels in love with another woman he can’t have. Talk about bad planning. He is something of a kite, buffeted by circumstances which blow him not only through personal crises, but also through some of the most significant events of the late 1800s, including the railroad riots of 1877, the creation of the Homestead Steel Works, the assassination of President Garfield, and the Johnstown Flood. Over time, and with the help of his muse, who dances maddeningly just beyond his reach, he takes control of his life, wresting it from the winds attempting to control him.

A carefully-researched historical novel about life among the privileged class of Pittsburgh during the Industrial Revolution.

Praise for Wealth and Privilege

"Thomas Baldwin is like a Rorschach inkblot test. Some people love him, some people find him unlikeable. Most people can't stand his wife. Others feel sorry for her. I take the fact that people have such a huge variety of reactions to my characters as a sign I succeeded in writing full, rich personalities." - Kirkus Reviews

"Wealth and Privilege is an exceptionally provoking read. The real romance is between the author and the reader" - Page Traveler

A staunch Yankee girl, she asked what is unromantic about the North or the East? Besides writing, she is also a dance instructor, an inveterate seamstress, the artistic director for several dance companies, an actress, and a history buff. The red-headed Karin is strong-willed and determined, something she inherited from her father. She tries to keep her true nature a secret to avoid being deemed a traitor by those loyal to the king. Karin and her father butt heads over her duty to her family and the Czech Crown. She is then sequestered to the Royal Viscount’s hunting lodge.

Not aware of everything that is happening, she becomes the target of an individual with murderous intent. Her heart soon becomes entangled though her father intends to wed her to another. The turmoil inside Karin deepens and reflects the turmoil of her homeland, on the brink of the Hussite Wars.

Excerpt

Karin's eyes fluttered opened, and she knew her hold on consciousness was firm; the darkness would not come for her again. She sent up a silent prayer of gratitude as she drank in the sights, sounds, and sensations around her. As she already knew, she was in her quarters at the hunting lodge. Someone had changed her into a nightdress, and her hair fell loose around her. The nightshift and her hair clung to her as if her vision of swimming had been more than illusion. Her eyes adjusted, and what had seemed like incredible light before was now dim to her sight. Dark drapes had been drawn, and she could just faintly make out the sunlight in the window beyond.

How long had she been caught up in this strange sleep? It seemed like so many hours ago she had been in the meadow, but she did not trust her perception of the passage of time. She strained to listen for sounds beyond the doors to her bedchambers. There were movements in the hall, but how close or how far was difficult for her to distinguish. Testing the mobility of her limbs, she shifted to sit. Her muscles protested her movements, resisting but obeying with some hesitation. And so, with some effort, she was able to work her way into a sitting position.

That was when she heard a noise outside her room. There were footsteps in the hall. And whoever was there came to her door. She could only manage to turn her head in that direction and watch as the knob twisted. Mary entered carrying a tray of tea and fresh damp cloths. Seeing her mistress awake and struggling to sit up in the bed, Mary almost dropped her tray, catching herself in time to save the cup of hot liquid.

"Milady!" She rushed forward. "No, milady, let me help you!" She grabbed for pillows to prop Karin up to take the strain off of her aching muscles.
Karin wanted to protest, but she couldn't deny how grateful her body was for the relief in effort. "Thank you, Mary," she croaked.

"I have your tea, milady." Mary grasped the cup and held it over to Karin's mouth for her to sip.

Karin reached up to take the cup from her. "I thank you for your help, but I am strong enough."

"Of course." Mary relinquished the cup but insisted on patting down Karin's face and arms with the cool cloth. She was such a creature of habit, Karin mused. This must have been part of Mary's routine as well while Karin lay unconscious. Now that Karin was awake, it was wholly unnecessary, but her handmaiden only followed instructions given.

"Could you open the drapes, Mary? I would so like to see the sunlight."

Mary nodded and moved across the room.

"How long have I been in here like this?" Her voice grew stronger. The warmth of the tea helped.

"Seven days, milady."

"Seven days?" Her teacup rattled. Mary rushed over to help steady it in her hands.

"Yes, you were quite sick for some time," Mary continued, turning away from Karin to continue her work around the room. She told Karin the story as if she were telling it for the hundredth time, "You were in a bad way when they brought you in, and no one could figure what had happened. When your father called for the doctor, he said it was poison."

"Poison?" Karin brushed a hand across her forehead. Could it be true?

Interview with Faith L. Justice + Giveaway of Sword of the Gladiatrix

Please welcome Faith L. Justice to the blog today! Faith is here to talk about her latest novel, Sword of the Gladiatrix, and I also have a chance for one of you to win a copy!

Hello Faith, and welcome to Passages to the Past! We are thrilled to be hosting you today as part of your blog tour!

02_Faith L. Justice_Author
Thanks, Amy. I’m happy to be here…and in such great company! All my favorite authors are here in reviews and interviews. Thanks for including me.

To begin, can you tell us a little about yourself and your novel, Sword of the Gladiatrix?

I’m a science geek and history junkie and have been all my life. I knocked around a bit and worked as a lifeguard, paralegal, systems analyst, human resources executive, and college professor before settling into full-time writing. I live in Brooklyn with my family and the required gaggle of cats. For fun, I like to dig in the dirt—my garden and various archaeological sites, although both are getting a little hard on the knees.

My current book is an action-adventure, lesbian romance set during Nero’s reign. Sword of the Gladiatrix features two fictional characters from the far ends of the Roman Empire: Afra, scout and beast master to the Queen of Kush; and Cinnia, warrior-bard and companion to Queen Boudica of the British Iceni. Both are enslaved and brought to Rome. They try to replace lost friendship and love in each other's arms, but fate intervenes. Before they complete their journeys, I toss in a pair of trained hunting cheetahs, a nasty snake dancing bitch, a natural disaster or two, a neurotic emperor, and several gladiator fights.

What inspired you to write a novel set in Imperial Rome? What draws you to that time period?

I love museums (see science geek and history junkie above). I spend days wondering around and reading all the labels. When I visited the British Museum several years ago, I came across a stone carving, from the first or second century, found in Turkey. It showed two women named Achilla and Amazon fighting with swords and shields, their helmets on the ground. Female gladiators! At that time, I didn’t know they existed. I researched and found that females (in small numbers) fought regularly over a two hundred year period.

The image of those two women haunted me. They were real women who lived and died centuries ago. Who were they? Where did they come from? How did they feel about their lives? That’s when I decided to tell their story. Well, not their story—no one knows their background or fates. So I created Afra and Cinnia to stand in for those two women carved on the stone. This time period is actually a departure for me. I usually write novels set in the fifth century based on historical women—ones who should be in the history books but aren’t.

What was the hardest scene to write?

Whenever Afra or Cinnia get beaten or abused. I hate “hurting” my characters, but this was a violent age and that’s how women and slaves were treated.

What was your favorite scene to write?

The sex scenes. In my first drafts, I always mark them with [brackets] and come back to them later so I don’t lose the flow of the plot. I like my sex scenes to be tender and erotic, but not blow by blow (pun intended) mechanical descriptions. Getting the right balance of romance and erotica is difficult but fun. I spend more time polishing dialog and rearranging action in my sex scenes than I do on any other.

What do you want readers to take away from Sword of the Gladiatrix?

Primarily a feeling of satisfaction; that they spent their time well and were entertained. Secondarily, I hope they learn a little history or have an insight into a different culture.

What appeals to you most about writing in the historical fiction genre?

I like discovering outstanding women and telling their stories—the ones I should have learned in school, but didn’t. We have a few bare facts about female gladiators or the mathematician Hypatia or Empress Galla Placidia, but what do we really know about the them? Building these few bare facts into interesting stories about compelling characters is why I write. And I love doing the research, digging for the details that bring a narrative to life. I learn for myself and share that information with my readers.

Who are your writing inspirations?

None of my favorite authors—Ursula K. Le Guin, Mark Twain, Nancy Kress, Neil Gaiman—inspired me to write. They intimidated me. I’ve always been a voracious reader. It was a run of horrible, banal, uninspired fantasy novels (I don’t remember the authors) that sent me to the keyboard screaming, “I can write better than that!”

Of course, I couldn’t—then.

What my favorite writers did inspire me to do is persevere. They all made their livings writing and they wrote a lot, getting better at what they did. I might never be a Twain or Le Guin, but I practiced, improved, and learned my craft, getting better with each story. My early stuff is better off in the trunk, but I’m proud of the work I have out now.

What was the first historical novel you read?

That’s a tough one because I’m a women of (ahem) a certain age and started reading long, long ago. A good guess would be Betty Zane by Zane Grey, a pioneer novel partially set in my home county. I found a battered copy in the attic among my father’s things when I was about nine or ten and immediately fell in love with the brave heroine and her brothers who helped settle the Ohio valley. The story sent me to the history books to find out more about them; a pattern often repeated as I read more historical fiction.

What is the last historical novel you read?

Ah, much easier! Let me check my Goodreads Challenge…The Tapestry by Nancy Bilyeau, which I finished a couple of weeks ago. A Tudor mystery and the third in her Joanna Stafford series. Highly recommended.

What historical time period do you gravitate towards the most with your personal reading?

I’m all over the place. The fifteen HF books I’ve read this year range from ancient Egypt (The Heretic Queen by Michelle Moran) to WWII (City of Women by David R. Gillham), touching down in nearly every major time period between. There seems to be no pattern except I avoid imperial Rome, because I don’t want to unconsciously imitate my peers.

Is there anything special you’d like us to know about it?

I’m working on a sequel Song of the Gladiatrix which I hope to have out next year. In the meantime, I’ll have a fact-based historical coming out this fall called Twilight Empress. It’s the fascinating story of Galla Placidia who ruled Rome just before the “fall.” It’s got romance, war, political intrigue, rebellious children, and Attila the Hun.

Thanks again, Amy, for hosting me on your blog, and thanks to your readers for stopping by.

Two women. Two swords. One victor.

An action-packed tale that exposes the brutal underside of Imperial Rome, Sword of the Gladiatrix brings to life unforgettable characters and exotic settings. From the far edges of the Empire, two women come to battle on the hot sands of the arena in Nero's Rome: Afra, scout and beast master to the Queen of Kush; and Cinnia, warrior-bard and companion to Queen Boudica of the British Iceni. Enslaved, forced to fight for their lives and the Romans' pleasure; they seek to replace lost friendship, love, and family in each other's arms. But the Roman arena offers only two futures: the Gate of Life for the victors or the Gate of Death for the losers.

Win a copy of Odin's Child by Bruce Macbain {International}

I was lucky enough to meet the lovely Mr. Macbain at the recent Historical Novel Society, and I'm super excited to be hosting a spotlight and giveaway of his book Odin's Child, the first book in his Odd Tangle-Hair series. Odin's Child is a great fit for readers for want to read more historicals with a male protagonist, and those who enjoy out-of-the-box historicals. Driven from the flaming ruin of his Iceland farmhouse, young Odd Tangle-Hair, the only survivor of a feud in which his family is slaughtered, steals a ship, rounds up a rag-tag crew and embarks on the Viking life. He swears one day to return, rich and powerful enough to take vengeance on his enemies. But how far off that day seems!

His father, Black Thorvald, had once been a chieftain in Iceland. But in the year 1000, when the country adopted Christianity, Thorvald denounced the new faith and shut himself up in his hall, shunning the world and shunned by it. Odd fears that the worm of cowardice that unmanned his father has infected him too. He has inherited from Thorvald a shock of black hair, a gift for poetry, and an allegiance to Odin, god of battles and magic. But Odd is heir to darker traits as well—a hint of madness and a temper which will sometimes cost him dearly.

Fate carries him and his men to a shamanistic healer in Lapland, to bloody religious strife in Norway, to the lair of a witch in Finland, and finally to the borders of Russia. Here Odd will leave his comrades behind to join the retinue of a Norwegian princeling who is fleeing to the court of Yaroslav, Grand Prince of Rus. New dangers wait for him in that faraway country.

Eager, curious, quick-witted—and sometimes wrong-headed—Odd Tangle-Hair recounts his story with candor, insight, and always an ironic sense of humor.

Praise for Odin's Child

“Meticulous research and poetic writing make Odin's Child a multilayered masterpiece...It brings medieval Scandinavia vividly alive. Written with passion, peopled with superbly realized characters, I was gripped from the very first page of this historical novel.” -Carol McGrath, author of The Handfasted Wife and The Swan-Daughter

“[Macbain’s] writing is vivid and compelling, and his understanding of Norse and Icelandic culture and history is woven deftly throughout the tale. The cast of characters is well-fleshed out and Odd makes for a wonderful protagonist. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, and I eagerly await its sequel. Highly recommended.” -Historical Novels Review, Editor’s Choice

Excerpt from Chapter 1: The Stallion Fight At Thingholt

On that day in May, as we rode to the stallion fight at Thingholt, my fate showed itself to me. A raven flew low across the sky into the rising sun and the moment I saw it I knew that Odin had spoken to me and that he would give me courage for the thing I had secretly made up my mind to do. Only now, half a century later, do I see what a long text was folded into that swift vision.

The spring of my sixteenth year had come early to the South Quarter of Iceland, with hot-cold days and thunderclouds sweeping up over the mountains. The stallions, smelling the air, trembled and kicked against their stalls. At this season if you stake out a mare where the stallions can smell her, they will fight like berserkers to get at her, and a great one will die before he breaks and runs.

Black Grani was such a one. This was his fourth spring and the time had come to bring him to the South Quarter Thing and fight him. Thorvald, my father, grumbled and held back, but I gave him no peace, until, at last, he flung up an arm, which meant 'yes'.

Although my brother Gunnar and I had set out early from the farm, the day was far gone before we came in sight of Thingholt plain and heard the distant shouts of men and the whinnying of horses. We left Grani and our mounts at the horse lines and walked across the sparse heath into the holiday crowd. And as we pushed our way through, there were some who knew us. A few old men came up and in low voices asked to be remembered to our father. But one red-faced woman, seeing us, cried, "Jesu!" and dragged her little daughter from our path.

About the Author

03_Bruce Macbain_AuthorFrom boyhood, Bruce Macbain spent his days in reading history and historical fiction. The Greeks and Romans have held a special fascination for him and this led to earning a master’s degree in Classical Studies and a doctorate in Ancient History. Along the way, he also taught English as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Borneo. Later, he taught courses in Greek and Roman civilization at Vanderbilt University and Boston University, and published a few dense scholarly monographs, read by very few. Recently, he has turned to writing fiction, a much more congenial pursuit. He has previously published two historical mysteries set in ancient Rome, Roman Games and its sequel, The Bull Slayer. Now, he has turned his attention to his other favorite folk, the Vikings. Odin's Child is the first novel of a trilogy, Odd Tangle-Hair’s Saga, which follows our hero—a wanderer, poet and warrior—from his tiny Iceland farm to the Great Palace in Constantinople. It will be published by Blank Slate Press in May, 2015.

Bruce spends his spare time in the kitchen, cooking spicy food.

For more information please visit Bruce Macbain's website. You can also follow him on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Goodreads.
