So, sometimes you have to do a little research or make a guess about the author's age. If the author was born in 1985, then a book set in 1980 would be a historical novel. I've also seen people miscategorizing novels that were written a long time ago as historical when they were set in the author's present time. For example, Dickens only wrote one historical novel, A Tale of Two Cities.
