In this new novel from the author of Water for Elephants, Sara Gruen again demonstrates her talent for creating spellbinding period pieces. At the Water’s Edge is a gripping and poignant love story about a privileged young woman’s personal awakening as she experiences the devastations of World War II in a Scottish Highlands village.
Madeline Hyde, a young socialite from Philadelphia, reluctantly follows her husband and their best friend to the tiny village of Drumnadrochit in search of a mythical monster—at the same time that a very real monster, Hitler, wages war against the Allied Forces. What Maddie discovers—about the larger world and about herself—through the unlikely friendships she develops with the villagers, opens her eyes not only to the dark forces that exist around her but to the beauty and surprising possibilities.
I love Water for Elephants! I know her last one (The Ape House?) didn't sound that appealing to me so I never picked it up, but this one definitely has me intrigued.
ReplyDeleteI loved "Water for Elephants," so know I will love this one! Can't wait to check it out- can't wait til June! In the meantime I have quite a list of other books to keep me occupied. For instance, am reading a really great historical fiction right now which is a twist on Thomas Edison- "Inventing Madness" by J.G. Schwartz http://www.inventingmadness.com/. It would make a thrilling movie! I do need to warn though, definitely not a book for anyone under 18!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed her first book, so I know I will enjoy this one as well. Another interesting book I recently read is the book called, "Inventing Madness," by author J.G. Schwartz. http://www.inventingmadness.com/ Inventing Madness is a fun book that will keep your heart racing!
ReplyDeleteYes, yes, and YES!
ReplyDeleteDefinite possibilities! Thanks for sharing about it.
ReplyDeleteYes, I read WATER FOR ELEPHANTS. It wasn't bad. But I certainly wouldn't add it to my list of favorites. A lot of people disagree with me, though.
ReplyDeleteI have read it but it wouldn't make my top 10 list either.. Would enjoy reading this one..
