ABOUT THE BOOK

SYNOPSIS
The author of Notorious Royal Marriages presents some of history's boldest, baddest, and bawdiest royals.

The bad seeds on the family trees of the most powerful royal houses of Europe often became the most rotten of apples: über-violent autocrats Vlad the Impaler and Ivan the Terrible literally reigned in blood. Lettice Knollys strove to mimic the appearance of her cousin Elizabeth I and even stole her man. And Pauline Bonaparte scandalized her brother Napoleon by having a golden goblet fashioned in the shape of her breast.

Chock-full of shocking scenes, titillating tales, and wildly wicked nobles, ROYAL PAINS is a rollicking compendium of the most infamous, capricious, and insatiable bluebloods of Europe.

If you have any questions during the live chat you can reach me at passagestothepast@gmail.com or IM me on Google Chat and I will get back to you!

I think that covers everything!  A big thanks to all of you that are here tonight...let the games begin!

Let's all raise a glass in congratulations to Leslie and wish her a Happy Release Day!!

To start off chat night, I'd like to pose a question of my own....Leslie, which of the royal pains included in your book was the most fascinating to research and why?

    ReplyDelete
  3. Hi Amy, thanks for hosting.

And hello Leslie! Happy Release Day!

    ReplyDelete
  4. Hello Virginie...thanks for hanging out with us tonight!

    ReplyDelete
  5. I made it Amy! Yeah!!!! I am so excited to read this book.

Leslie, I am sure it must be fascinating to read all the saucy antics of the royals. Do you have a favorite bad girl/boy?

Also, where can we buy one of these bags if we don't win? I looked online and couldn't find it!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Leslie,

What period of history had in your opinion the most interesting pains?

    Thanks,
    Sarah

    ReplyDelete
  7. This is Martina, by the way. The name on my blog is Virginie (my grandmother's name...) :)

    ReplyDelete
  8. Hi Leslie,

Who is your least favorite royal?

    Thanks,
    Kathy

    ReplyDelete
  9. Yeah thank you for hosting Amy I am super excited that I did not miss this one. I love your work Leslie.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Hi everybody! Leslie, my question is a little like Amy's but I'm dying to know: which rogue is your favorite?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hi all!! Leslie should be here soon, sorry for the delay!

    ReplyDelete
  12. It looks like we all have a similar question! We want to know who outranks all as the fav badey!

    ReplyDelete
  13. No worries! And I just noticed that I asked the same question as Colleen! Great minds...

    ReplyDelete
  14. Haha! After reading Royal Pains I find it hard to pick who was the baddest - they were all pretty nasty!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hi Amy, Hi Leslie! *raises glass to toast* I can't wait to read this book! Where do you do your research? Online, museums, historical texts, libraries? Do you have a favorite historian that you use often?

    ReplyDelete
  16. No worries amy! Your author chats are really organized. I participated in one the other day that was a multi author chat and it was all over the place! It was really funny to follow, though, because somehow the topics kept verging into the scintillating! With yours we know we will get some cool author insight.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I have always loved Pauline Bonaparte...from all I've heard, she really drove her brother up the wall...

    ReplyDelete
  18. I am SOOO looking forward to reading this book. It's right up my alley...

    ReplyDelete
  19. Ha Christy! I am blushing at the comment..great minds think alike. I am honoured :) Love your books!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh great question Jen! I am alwasy fascinated by the research aspect of writing!

Colleen - oh thanks for saying that! that makes me feel really good! I have so much fun with these and I'm tickled that you all love them as well!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hi everybody! Thanks Amy for hosting another chat which I'm sure will be awesome. And of course happy release day Leslie!

Like everyone else, I'm interested in who's the worst of the worst. lol

    ReplyDelete
  22. Thanks so much Colleen...:) I am very excited to get my hands on this one...

    ReplyDelete
  23. Thanks so much Colleen...:) I am very excited to get my hands on this one...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Well, Colleen my next announcement will be right up your alley - my next live chat for April will be with the one and only Christy English!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Whoops! There's an echo in here...and I caused it. Sorry about that...

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hi all sorry for interrupting so wanted to be here and the comment box wouldn't open :0(

    ReplyDelete
  27. And I am super excited about next month's Live Chat, let me tell you...I need to get my fingers limber and ready for all that quick typing...:)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Leslie, I'm wondering if your research showed that any particular era or royal house tended to produce more "pains" than others?

    ReplyDelete
  29. These Live Chats really are a lot of fun...I love hearing the answers to all the questions...

    ReplyDelete
  30. Just read your Christy English comment ~~whoo hoo

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hi, everyone! Sorry, I was over at the other post!

    welcome!!!!

To answer the questions, I have a couple of favorite baddies in the book: Lettice Knollys and Pauline Bonaparte, to name a couple. I guess it's hard to name a "least favorite" baddie, but I researched some truly insane psychopaths, like Vlad the Impaler and Ivan the Terrible.

I do my research mostly with secondary sources, reading dozens of biographies and biographical articles. Each book represents nearly a year of research.

    ReplyDelete
  32. It seems that Leslie is on a different post - trying to get her over here....one more minute!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Woo hooo!!!!! I will DEFINITELY not miss that chat either! I think I have figured out how to make sure to be here...set an announcement on my work email and my phone! No matter where I turn I will be reminded :). I will be there in April to chat with Christy!

    ReplyDelete
  34. That's the way to do it Colleen! I forget everything so I have sticky notes everywhere!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Sadie, I'd have to say that the most interesting pains were probably in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance because you've got a bunch of autocrats doing horrid things to their own people; it goes way beyond "royals behaving badly"

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yay! Glad you found your way here, Leslie.

I'd love to know where your favourite place to write is - what your weapon of choice is.. (Typewriter, computer, good old pen and paper...)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Thanks you guys! Next month's chat is am exciting prospect for me.
And so is this one! Leslie, I am happy to hear that Pauline is one of your favorites...

    ReplyDelete
  38. I just read a book with Lettice Knollys as the main character (along with Elizabeth) and she was sympathetically written. It will be interesting to read some fact of her naughtiness! I am currently reading a book about the Borgias. Did you find out anything particularly saucy about them? They seem ripe for this sort of thing!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Just got home from the doctors and signed in on the wrong post. Didn't want to miss this.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Wow - a year of research!! It must be tough to find the point where you've done enough research and decide it's time to sit down and write!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hi Leslie, thank you so much for coming by and joining all of us! :)

I am curious, where did you get the idea to write Royal Pains, and what made you want to write about historical bad guys?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Nice to be hear with you ladies and Leslie! I am super excited to read Royal Pains since I loved the other ones. By the way Vlad scares the HELL out of me.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Woah...the chapters on Vlad the Impaler and Ivan the Terrible were insane! I recommend not reading them before bed :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Amy -- the most fascinating royals to research were the ones I knew least about -- those from central Europe and Russia, like Vlad Dracula and Erszebet Bathory (known as the "Blood Countess"). It's an era of history I didn't know much about, and also a part of the world I wasn't as well versed in as, say 18th or 19th c. English history.

However, these bloody royals certainly weren't my faves. I prefer the sex crazed ones to the violent ones. One of my favorites in the book is the Duke of Cumberland, the younger brother of George III, who is such a loser -- you can;t make this stuff up. he goes from an illicit love affair into an illicit marriage (with someone else) and his behavior is the reason George III had the Royal Marriages Act of 1772 passed.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Leslie was there some moment that you remember which triggered your love of royal history?

    ReplyDelete
  46. I have a weird one for you Leslie, let talk about the cover art. Have your non-fiction works covers been chosen by you? I really like that they all keep the same classical theme.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Ohhh, I don't think that's a weird question, Lizzy. I love hearing about how covers are chosen :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Virginie ...catching up with your questions: The bag is from Ballard.

Favorite place to write ... I write my notes in longhand (with a purple Pilot extra fine point marker) on notebook paper. And I keep one file folder per Royal. But I write my books on the computer. Yet I have to edit on a printed out hard copy. My home office/library has wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling white bookcases and a wood burning fireplace, with a portrait of Emma Hamilton over the mantel. It's very cozy. I posted some photos of it at my Lady Novelist blog at www.leslie-carroll.blogspot.com around Christmas time last year.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I've heard Vlad, Ivan, and Lettice mentioned. Since I read mostly British historical fiction, I'd like to know some of British bad guys listed in the table of contents.

    ReplyDelete
  50. It is amazing how tame our current royals seems to be (comparatively, of course). Are there any more modern royals that you think would make it into any books of this type in the future, or do you think maybe the new "royalty" behaving badly are celebrities? Just curious (sorry if of subject slightly :)).

    ReplyDelete
  51. Oh that Erszebet Bathory was one crazy chick! All of those poor women she butchered just because of her vanity!

    ReplyDelete
  52. It sounds like a lovely room!

    PS. I adore Emma Hamilton!

    ReplyDelete
  53. LOL, I love the sex-crazed ones too! I'm always shocked at how much illicit sex went on behind tapestries!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Hi Ladies!! I'm so happy I made it and am voraciously catching up on all the comments. Leslie, Congratulations!! I just had a feeling it would be either Lettice or Pauline- both gorgeous and vicious-lol! I can't wait to read this:) Like Lizzy, I also adore that cover, and want to know what made you choose this-beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Jessica, I decided to write about some of the Bad (and some simply naughty, or outre) boys and girls because I wanted to take a little break from royal behavior outside of the confines of an affair or a marriage, which had been my bailiwick in the first two royal books. Also, it gave me the opportunity to take a look at what some of the relatives of kings and queens were up to.

To answer the question about the Borgias, they got left on the cutting room floor and didn't make it into this book, although I adore them and they deserve a book (or several) all their own. I fully intend to get to them at some point, because I've always been fascinated by Lucretia. My grandmother used to have one of those "poison rings."

    ReplyDelete
  56. Welcome Lucy! It's so awesome you could make it!

    ReplyDelete
  57. So excited for this chat! Thank you!

My question: Most often were the awful things done justified by the circumstances and time period or did you come across more just really insane people?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Loved the first two books and have been waiting for this one. I too like the tone the covers set.

    ReplyDelete
  59. A book on the Borgias would be sweet Leslie! I too am fascinated by Lucrezia. I just hope Showtime portrays them accurately!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Oh Amy- I just couldn't miss this! What a great idea this series of yours:)

    ReplyDelete
  61. Ooohh! I second that, Amy! A whole book on the Borgias sounds great...

    ReplyDelete
  62. I am having to constantly hit enter to see posts am I doing something wrong>

    ReplyDelete
  63. Leslie, I loved your books, and have been waiting for this one for what seems like FOREVER!

Amy, thanks for hosting this chat! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  64. I second Amy, a book on the Borgias would be awesome. I'm definitely excited for the show.

And I'm curious about Colleen's question too -- it seems like a lot of the royals today have tame lives compared to some of the craziness we read about that happened with royals in history. I wonder if it's different because of the time period, or maybe just because there's so much media now that it's hard to cover up craziness and bad behavior.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Showtime~ I must have missed something.
    Congratualtions!!
    When will that be happening

    ReplyDelete
  66. Lady Bren, I think I've always loved royal history. I used to dress up like a princess when I was a little girl, and I always loved stories about real royals. So I guess it was bound to happen sooner or later.

Lizzy, et al. re: cover art. I had no input regarding the first cover (ROYAL AFFAIRS). And I love it. The other 2 covers, NOTORIOUS ROYAL MARRIAGES and ROYAL PAINS are more 18th c. drawings than 19th c. paintings and seem more thematically related. I actually proposed the cover for RP, among other pix, when they asked for my suggestions. The publishers definitely chose the images for the 1st 2 royal books. Funny, I didn't think the image for NOTORIOUS ROYAL MARRIAGES looked very "regal" although I do like the drawing itself.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Leslie,

A purple Pilot extra fine point marker! Brilliant! Doesn't writing just flow smoother with a purple pen!

    Kathy

    ReplyDelete
  68. I am really enjoying Sins of the House of Borgia and cannot wait for the Showtime show to come on. I didn't really know much about them until recently and now I am hooked. I would love to read more nonfiction about them!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Where is the chat? Is it here in the comments?

    ReplyDelete
  70. Showtime will be airing a series on The Borgias, similar to the one they did on The Tudors.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Am glad there will be another book in this series. will it stop there or do you think there will be more? If the Borgias were left on the cutting room floor, there is a good start for another book.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Ladies I am on the same page as you I can not wait for the Borgia's and plan on reading the Jean Plaidy one before the series starts. Leslie you would rock them.

Yes Amy thank you for this wonderful event it is a blast to see so many book lovers in one place at one time

HEY LUCY!!!! Nice to see you here.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Anonymous - yes, the page does need refreshing to show the new comments.

ninoskasua - yes, this is the chat here in the comments.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I am really stoked that you all are lovin' this as much as I am! I've got the biggest grin on my face :) Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  75. I know! It stars in april! I can't wait to watch the Borgias as well. I just love the story line. Have you guys read any book by Eleanor Herman. She has a book called the Mistress of the Vatican. Very interesting book!

    ReplyDelete
  76. Hi Lady Bren!

Showtime has a new series about the Borgias starting in April. It looks really good and steamy, and now that the Tudors are over I am ready for some more royal scandal on my tv!

    ReplyDelete
  77. I love the covers Leslie they are perfect and they just feel like you.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I can't wait to see Jeremy Irons as Rodrigo Borgia!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Leslie, which of your books did you enjoy doing the research for and writing the most? Also, what is your writing process like? How do you know when it's time to move from researching to writing?

    ReplyDelete
  80. I really want to read Leslie new book! I can't wait to go and buy it from barnes and nobles!

    ReplyDelete
  81. I must ask this Leslie are you working on another non-fiction release? I know you have to have something up your sleeve.

    ReplyDelete
  82. British baddies in the Table of Contents of ROYAL PAINS: King John, Richard III and his brother the Duke of Clarence, Lettice Knollys, the Duke of Cumberland, Prince Eddy (son of Edward VII), Princess Margaret (sister of Queen Elizabeth II) [I don't have a copy of the book in front of me, so I hope I'm not leaving anyone out]

Colleen -- so true! Most of our current crop of royals, British or otherwise, hardly behave badly, when compared to their predecessors. I really had to make decisions, which, for example, is why Princess Margaret and not Sarah Ferguson, is one of my royal pains. I spotlighted people whose behavior had a major impact on their realm. And Margaret's starcrossed affair with Group Captain Peter Townsend was the scandal of the 1950s! Fergie getting her toes sucked hardly compares.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Jeremy Irons is such an awesome actor, he should play it well. I can't wait to see who plays Cesare and Lucrezia. I saw a picture but didn't know the actors.

    ReplyDelete
  84. How much research do you conduct Leslie? I would totally love to have your job or atleast be your assistant. I love the details in your previos books? What authors do you read Leslie?

    ReplyDelete
  85. PoCoKat -- funny how we get into our little routines. One day I started with the purple Pilot pens and now I do it all the time. But I always autograph my books with a red one! Ever since my very first title in 2002.

    ReplyDelete
  86. DO YOU PLAN TO WRITE ON ANY PARTICULAR HISTORICAL KING OR QUEEN IN GENERAL IN THE FUTURE?

    ReplyDelete
  87. @Colleen - Have you seen the trailer for the Borgias? Alot of the actors are Canadian or British.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I just choked on my tea when you mentioned Fergie getting her toes sucked! I didn't expect that.

I would love to here as well what you are working on now!

    ReplyDelete
  89. Leslie, what is your next project?

    ReplyDelete
  90. I am so excited to hear that King John is in this book...he is one baddie that I really love...

    ReplyDelete
  91. ninoskasua - I haven't seen the trailer yet! I saw it online but I was at work and my speakers aren't working there :). I keep forgetting to watch it at home. I will have to do that tonight before I forget again :).

    ReplyDelete
  92. Hi everyone! I forgot! Need to catch up! Hi Leslie!

    ReplyDelete
  93. ninoskasua -- if you want to come to Vermont and work for free, I'd love an assistant :) I do lots of research. For each of these royal nonfiction books, I read 40 to 60 books, plus about that many biographical articles, plus I scour the internet for related articles.

Question for those who've already ROYAL PAINS: Do YOU have a favorite pain, and why?

And by the way, the violent "pains" (like Vlad and Ivan and Bathory), completely freaked me out as well. The cruelty that these people were capable of perpetrating was astonishing. And they considered themselves completely sane! And another thing ... my mandate from my editor was to write all that with a sense of humor!

    ReplyDelete
  94. Hi Lizzy!!! So happy to meet here!! Lizzy I'm reading the Plaidy one on Borgia now and it's fantastic.
And- I'm sure Leslie, you would write a terrific Borgia novel...you must write it!

    ReplyDelete
  95. With your focus on this non-fiction series, will you be writing any fiction anytime soon? You must certainly have some interesting research that could be used.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I want to thank Amy for posting this event on goodreads. I love goodreads. Does anyone else use this site? What about you Leslie are you a goodreads author?

    ReplyDelete
  97. Good question librarypat...I've actually wondered that myself!

    ReplyDelete
  98. I use Goodreads all the time...I love it too!

BTW...found the bag on Ballards and it is so pretty (just like the picture :)). Will have to get this if I don't win!

    ReplyDelete
  99. ninoskasua - I LOVE Goodreads and am really digging their new look!

    ReplyDelete
  100. Leslie, I have to ask- will you ever come up to Montreal for a book signing, event, anything?? I am dying to meet you!

    ReplyDelete
  101. Colleen - I already have that tote and the green fleur de lis on one order :) They are SOOOO cute!

    ReplyDelete
  102. @Leslie - I would love to work for free for you but I live in California :( I wish I lived closer.

Do you travel anywhere to do your research?

    ReplyDelete
  103. 40-60 books? Wow! What's your favorite online resources?

    ReplyDelete
  104. Oh I didn't see the fleur de lis!!! This could be bad for my wallet. I love bags!!!

I would love to know of your plans, Leslie, for a any fiction books as well!

    ReplyDelete
  105. Uh oh. Just looked on the Ballards site. I'm in Heaven!!

    ReplyDelete
  106. All these questions to catch up:

Anonymous ... I have it on very good authority that there will be a novel coming out about the early years of Marie Antoinette... wait until this summer.

    Heather, hi!!

I am SO happy to see my dear historical fiction bloggers here ... Lucy and Lizzy and Heather -- and AMY you are doing such a MAGNIFICENT job.

I am writing the ROYAL ROMANCES book, so that's in the nonfiction pipeline, and I will also have another nonfiction book coming out sometime this year that I think will be titled something like THE ROYALS, THEIR LIVES AND LOVES, FROM WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR TO WILLIAM OF WALES. I was commissioned by Barnes & Noble to to do it and it's one of those hardcover books that contain the facsimiles of historical documents.

After that I can think about something Borgia-y. :)

    ReplyDelete
  107. Fleur de lis! That sounds gorgeous... and I too want to know about Leslie's fiction writing plans...

    ReplyDelete
  108. will you be doing a book signing tour>

    ReplyDelete
  109. Wow, you are a busy woman Leslie!! That's good news for us :)

    ReplyDelete
  110. Leslie, both the Marie Antoinette novel and THE ROYALS sound amazing...

    ReplyDelete
  111. Oooh, those historical documents facsimilies sound intruiging!

    ReplyDelete
  112. Marie Antoinette!!?? Squeeee!!!

    <3

    ReplyDelete
  113. My historical fiction is keeping me in 18th c. France right now, and hopefully for the next few years.

Lucy, I just asked my husband how far we live from Montreal. Maybe a road trip by motorcycle! I'm dying to meet you, too! A book signing in Montreal, peut-etre?

    ReplyDelete
  114. So many exciting things coming down the pipeline! And I have to say I love the covers of Royal Marriages and Royal Pains the best of the three.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I almost couldn't get back into the comments section when I tried to refresh! So much good discussion I guess.

I found the fleur de lis bag....oh no I want it so bad!

Leslie, would love to hear if you have plans for a book tour. Maybe come on down to Florida...pretty please :)!

    ReplyDelete
  116. Lady Bren, where do you live? My publishers aren't sending me on any tours (that I know of), but my husband has been known to hop on his motorcycle and we do "stealth signings." So sometimes the Northeast is fair game.

Montreal update: 3 hours, 55 minutes from our home!

    ReplyDelete
  117. The Royal Romances will be interesting to see. As does the book with B&N. I can't imagine how busy you must be!

    ReplyDelete
  118. @Leslie Thanks for chatting with us. I look forward to your new books and future new books. I love the title!
    @Amy Thanks!!

    ReplyDelete
  119. Awwww...kind of far to take a motorcycle to Florida :(. Lucky Northeasterners!

    ReplyDelete
  120. And on your way to Florida you can stop in Atlanta :)

With the publishers not shelling out the dough for authors to tour it's a good thing there are virtual book tours!

    ReplyDelete
  121. I too live in Florida but it is great motorcycle country :0) I'm not too far from daytona

    ReplyDelete
  122. Leslie!! That would be soo cool!! Just say when:)

    ReplyDelete
  123. Thank you ninoskasua for coming to chat night, I hope you enjoyed it!

    ReplyDelete
  124. I've just been nudged in the ribs by my friend Juliet Grey who tells me that the fleur-de-lis bag giveaway is for when Amy hosts a chat for her debut in August. She's the author of the Marie Antoinette historical fiction trilogy.

    ReplyDelete
  125. We are too far out of the way for you to even consider a signing. Grew up 65 miles south of Montreal on Lake Champlain in NY. Am now in the hills of TN. Asheville, NC isn't too far and they are a happening place.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Oh I agree Amy, virtual tours have allowed me to see/meet so many authors I have really admired and enjoyed. It doesn't seem like too many come in person to Central Florida so I "meet" them any way I can!

    ReplyDelete
  127. we could just plan a southeast excursion up ....amy colleen what do you think lol

    ReplyDelete
  128. Lady Bren - I'm a native Orlandoinian, but living in Atlanta now. Daytona brings back some memories for me :)

    ReplyDelete
  129. Leslie, thank you so much for chatting! I can't wait to read this book!

Thank you Amy for hosting! This was my first chat and it was so much fun!

    ReplyDelete
  130. *wink* @Leslie...you know I've heard such wonderful things about Juliet Grey! Please tell her that she is more than welcome to Passages to the Past at any time!

    ReplyDelete
  131. I just need to thank Amy and of course Leslie this is the highlight of my day. Entered rehab yesterday after a stroke(at age 47) a week ago Saturday so first night alone but feel like I'm with friends :0)

    ReplyDelete
  132. Colleen, I wouldn't put it past my husband to get on the bike and head down to Florida ... it's just a matter of the time away from the computer to write all these books. In fact he suggested that we go down to Key West. He loves any and all excuses (I mean reasons) to get on the bike!)

I just wanted to ask about Rogues - did you ever come across the reason why they are called rogues? And what attracted you to these guys? And what recommendations would you have for getting into a Regency Rake (if you were about writing a historical novel).

    Thanks!
