I, along with Kaitlyn at Penguin Publishing, am pleased to bring you a 2 book giveaway for Her Mother's Daughter: A Novel of Queen Mary Tudor by Julianne Lee!
Release Date: December 1, 2009
SYNOPSIS: Her name was Mary Tudor. First of the Tudor queens, she has gone down in history as Bloody Mary. But does she deserve her vicious reputation?
She was the daughter of Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon, and half-sister to Edward VI and Elizabeth I. Mary Tudor's life began as the sweetly innocent, pampered princess of Wales-until the age of eleven when the father she adored cast aside the mother she worshiped and declared Mary a bastard. Only after years of exile did Mary finally rise to the throne alongside the man who, aside from her father, was her greatest love-and her greatest betrayer.
Told by Mary herself and the people around her, this grand-scale novel takes us back to the glittering court of sixteenth-century England, and tells the tragic story of a fascinating, largely misunderstood woman who withstood the treachery and passion around her only to become one of England's most vilified queens.

Giveaway ends on November 30th!
I have read a book or two regarding Mary Tudor.. I think in a lot of ways she was misunderstood. I imagine it could not have been easy being cast off by a father who really didn't careand replaced in her eyes by Elizabeth. It is actually funny that she was known as Bloody Mary but she only did the same thing her father did. They liked to have heads cut off... What a time to have lived in!!!!

I have to admit, I don't know a whole lot about Mary. I would probably guess she got a bad rap because of the people around her. Her legacy was probably over dramatized throughout the years.
ReplyDeleteWould love to read this!

I don't consider Mary to be a monster; as to being misunderstood? I think it is more a case of Mary misunderstanding the needs and the feelings of her subjects. And perhaps misunderstanding the will of God. I'd love to read this book.

My favorite subjects- books and the Tudors. Everyone is quick to say Mary was a monster but really look who her father is the beheader! Mary was trying to undo what her father did to their religion and all she knows is death and abandonment and ect. I think she was mis-understood. cassanrose(at)gmail(dot)com

pipers4323@yahoo.com - It's nice to see another book about the forgotten Tudor. To often Mary is overlooked or dismissed in favor of her sister.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a great book. There aren't enough about Mary.

I would love to read this book, please enter me. I don't think that Mary was really a monster or misunderstood - but more of a product of everything that she was forced to go through in life.

I would very much like to be able to win a copy of this book! Thanks for offering it!
ReplyDeleteI think that many of the 'star' females in Tudor England had ample reasons to "have issues". While deplore some of what Mary did I also believe that she was a woman who longed for acceptance and love and was manipulated by some of the strong male figures in her life.

Would love to be considered for this one! Such a fan of Henry the 8th!

ReplyDeleteIt's hard for me to think of Mary as anything but a monster. She burnt and tortured more Protestants than during the Spanish Inquisition!
Oh I've been waiting for this one!! There really isn't a lot out there on Mary - she's stuck in the middle of her bigger than life father and her amazing half sister.

I am so excited about this book! I have become increasingly curious about the life of Mary Tudor recently. There do not seem to be many books on her, besides Jean Plaidy's "In the Shadow of the Crown," and a few Philippa Gregory's where she makes an appearance, so this book is doubly fabulous. :o)

I would love to win this! I love Tudor history.
ReplyDeleteI always thought it was such the double standard that she was nicknamed Bloody Mary, and she only did the same thing that her father did, but he wasn't given the same kind of nickname.

I'd love to be entered--I've been looking for a good book on Mary Tudor!
ReplyDeletemandafaye(at)gmail(dot)com
I think Mary Tudor is extremely interesting. Her "Bloody Mary" reputation overlooks the extreme emotional distress, neglect and abuse she suffered. I'm not an apologist, by any means, but she is a far more complex person whose life as a teenager and young adult almost guaranteed that she would behave in extreme ways on the throne.
ReplyDeletecherylandersonbrown@gmail.com
I'd love to win this book! I have percieved Mary Tudor as one with a conflictive nature, but I do pitty her early years as she grew-up struggling for survival during very difficult times. I give her credit for the way she defended her Mom before eveyone else's cruelty and can appreciate her love for Katherine not matter the diffucult and doubting circumstances. ~Bella

I don't know anything about Mary Tudor -- not a history buff -- but do enjoy Julianne's writing.

I would love to win this book! I love to read about this time period. I've read books both ways where she is a monster and where she was misunderstood. On one hand, I'd like to think she was misunderstood, but on the other, I'm sure the people who were burned at the stake thought she was a monster. I think she was a woman who had a lot of problems and no one to love and help her.
ReplyDeletelaarlt78(at)hotmail(dot)com
I think Mary, with a deep commitment to her religion, was misunderstood. Nevertheless, she was a terror to those around her.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to expanding my knowledge of this captivating period in history.
wolfcarol451(at)gmail(dot)com
I've always thought of Mary as extremely lonely and unsure of everyone around her. Who CAN you trust if you can't even trust your own father?

Yes, Mary Tudor did some unspeakable things. I think she was a woman that was strongly effected by things that happened in her life. She saw her mother thrown aside most cruelly by her beloved father and then was thrown aside herself. Then she was displaced as heir by a sickly boy who, on top of it all, was Protestant. And then to be married to a man you love and not to be loved in return. The woman just took her power and used it to take out her frustrations and unhappiness...much the worse for the Protestants. Am I saying that she was justified? No. But I believe Mary felt that she was right because of her pain and suffering and that the adoption of the Protestant faith had a hand in it.

I am always looking for books on great figures in history. May have been misunderstood and misrepresented. Finding out what shaped their lives helps explain why they became who they were. The more viewpoints, the better.
ReplyDeletelibrarypat@comcast.net
Mary may look like a monster to some individuals but you just need to examine the background in which she was raised you begin to understand the motives behind her actions. Mary was rejected by her father. She was raised by a mother who was an avid Catholic in a country that shifted its religious affiliation on the whim of Henry VIII. She also had to be politically astute to manage the challenging relationship between her and Elizabeth. She may have acted in a manner that harmed many but she was acting on her own convictions. Yes she may have appeared as a monster but yet her actions have to evaluated against her upbringing and values.

Oh I do hope I win! I realise all entering hope they are the winner. Thank you for this great contest. I do not think she was so much misunderstood, rather she herself misunderstood, if that makes sense. I would be able to answer best after reading the novel.

ReplyDeleteI have always had a soft spot for both Mary Tudor and her mother Katherine. I admire her ability to be wrenched from her parents, and especially her mother, for so long and so young, and yet absolutely stand up for what she believed in, both against her father and her brother. I can't imagine what it would be like to be brought up as a princess only to be completely shunned by your own father, declared a bastard, ignored and degraded for years, and then to finally rise up and become Queen.
She seemed to have a sweet innocence to her, even in middle age, that gave everyone the beneift of the doubt and made her a nice person if not an outstanding Queen.
So yes, despite her reputation, I have a genuine soft spot for Mary.
I think with Mary Tudor, it was a matter of her misunderstanding AND her being misunderstood. I would love to read this book. Count me in. :D
