Your first look at Joss Stone as Anne of Cleves in The Tudors

When I first read that Joss Stone was going to play Anne of Cleves (Henry's fourth wife), I gotta tell ya...I just didn't see it. But from looking at these pictures I think she pulls it off quite well.

As I am not a Tudor watcher, I will rely on those that are to let me know if she plays the part well. I know the girl can sing, I've seen her perform live and loved it - her voice is like buttah, but that doesn't mean crap once the cameras are turned on. Ha - I could just see it...Joss as Anne starts breaking it down to Henry, singing "A car this fine, don't pass your way everyday. Dontcha wanna ride baby".

I rented the first two seasons of The Tudors the other weekend. I got about one and a half episodes in and had to turn it off. As much as I wanted to like it...I mean seriously, how appropriate would this be for me to enjoy...it's right up my alley?! I just couldn't do it. I am not a prude by any means and can be quite raunchy if I want, but the sex scenes were a bit much for me (especially when my daughter walks out of her bedroom at the most inappropriate time...she must think that's how all of my books are, and that I read porn) Ha! I know that for it to be entertaining, you have to focus on all the scandals and such. I just felt it didn't do justice to the books you and I read - it felt cheapened. But, that's just my opinion.

What are your thoughts on the Tudors? Am I being too hard on them? Should I try watching again?

For all you Tudor fans the new season starts on April 5, 2009!

  1. I like the show The Tudors, but I was disappointed that it started with Anne B. instead with Henry and Katherine. The guy who plays Henry is a bit more wimpy than he should be and I don't see him getting fatter!

On the other hand, I'm enjoying the acting and the costumes and the story.

  2. This is really why I haven't watched the show. I don't think I could divorce history from entertainment, so it's probably not appropriate for me. I almost wish I could because it would be nice to visualize it and I'm sure the show is good, but I don't think I'll try it.

  3. Amy, I had seen trailers & previews on the Tudors and I just could not get excited about it. I just didn't want to be reading all about my favorite "REAL" people and then be combatting that with the images of the actors in the show. So I avoid it. BUT it is funny because even though I won't watch the show, I also read an article about Joss Stone being Anne of Cleves, and was just as interested as you were. LOL

  4. Hi

I thought that this was going to be great - I got part was through the first episode & gave up

I am not over -fussy with something that is after all meant to be an entertainment but even so, for me - the inaccuracies just grated too much.

  5. I've wanted to watch the show, but I bet that would bother me as well. Like all the unnecessary sex in Watchmen. Ugh...

  6. It does have a lot of inaccuracies and gratuitious sex, especially in the first season. I found that the second season improved considerably on both counts, though. The last couple of episodes were quite moving.

  7. I didn't mind all the naughty behavior. I have to say that the second season seemed to drag a bit.

  8. I am with you 100%. I watched 20 minutes of it and was disgusted! In that small space of time Henry had 2 women, one of them a maid in Katherine's bedchamber right after Katherine exited. Yeah, right. Sorry but it was just too inaccurate for my taste.

Joss Stone played in Eragon too. I think she's a good actress, as far as I can tell. Too bad I won't be watching her The Tudors...

  9. I agree with you that Joss pulls off the Anne of Cleves look fairly well. I'm looking forward to this season as I really enjoy The Tudors. Susan is right about the story getting better is season two and the raunchy sex scenes dimishing.

  10. I love The Tudors, though it's pure entertainment, rather than history. I can't believe Joss Stone is playing Anne of Cleves!

  13. I've enjoyed The Tudors (I have both seasons on DVD)however, I definitely have enjoyed it more since I discovered that its purposely historically inaccurate. You have to watch as a soap opera-type show in order to appreciate it. It does bother me that those who watch it who might not have much knowledge of the Tudor period would take it as truth as its very far from it.

Also, I agree with Beth F- I can't see Jonathan Rhys Meyers getting any fatter either. That said, there was only supposed to be one season of this show and they've stretched it into three... so there might be a fat suit in his future.

  14. I must admit I too am not a prude, however watching the sex scenes w/my mom in the room is a bit much at first. We tape the shows and then watch like 3 in row together. We got over our "embarassment" quite quickly, becuase Henry VIII is forever having sex w/somone.
The Tudors is certainly not accurate, but its entertainment, and easy on the eyes. Everyone is so beautiful. And the costumes and scenery are just gorgeous.
Plus it's a chnce for mom and I to have a girls night :) I'll keep you posted on Joss Stone. I love her voice also.

  15. I for one am bitterly dissapointed with 'The Tudors'. The casting is wrong and the scriptwriters must think that if they toss in a few recorded quotes from the time then they are being historically accurate. And they are not.
I should know. I have just had published my fourth novel' Tudor Rose' based upon the life and writings of a true life woman close to the court of two Tudor kings and nine Tudor queens.
As an avid lover of history - I have felt honour- bound to keep faithful to the truth in my own work and feel it a great pity that HBO/BBC have not.

  17. I was warned about the 1st season and inparticular the 1st episode was raunchy, but it did improve. I was ready with my fast forward. After the 1st couple of episodes the sex was in many case all but eliminated. And, as Susan H. says the 2nd season improved on all accounts. It really did and I have enjoyed this series so much. The acting is incredible, and for the most part historically accurate, suprisingly so considering Hollywood. I'm glad I was forwarned and prepared. You might want to give it another chance. Start on the 2nd season. The 3rd season has been wonderful so far.
