Have you read....

...Company of Liars by Karen Maitland?
This is her first historical fiction novel and I'm thinking it looks like a great read. Have you read this yet or heard anything about it? It was released on September 30th and it's getting good reviews on Amazon.

She also has a website if you want to check it out.

Here is the synopsis:

In this extraordinary novel, Karen Maitland delivers a dazzling reinterpretation of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales—an ingenious alchemy of history, mystery, and powerful human drama.

The year is 1348. The Black Plague grips the country. In a world ruled by faith and fear, nine desperate strangers, brought together by chance, attempt to outrun the certain death that is running inexorably toward them.

Each member of this motley company has a story to tell. From Camelot, the relic-seller who will become the group’s leader, to Cygnus, the one-armed storyteller . . . from the strange, silent child called Narigorm to a painter and his pregnant wife, each has a secret. None is what they seem. And one among them conceals the darkest secret of all—propelling these liars to a destiny they never saw coming.

  1. I've heard of it and I'd love to read it, but I've never actually heard whether it's good or not. It just looks promising.

  3. Amy, I've heard of this one. I can't remember where - it was probably on a book blog!

I recently read World Without End by Ken Follett and one of the major story lines was The Black Death plague.

I loved WWE and I think that connection is why this one sounds particularly good to me.

  4. World Without End was really good, as was it's predecessor, The Pillars of the Earth!

  6. I've read it (reviewed it for Booklist but it's not online anywhere). Good read, lots of interesting detail on aspects of medieval life you don't hear much about, but the pacing is uneven. Will be curious to hear what you think!

  9. I love checking out new (to me) blogs and discovering books I need to add to my TBR list (which is so long now I'll have to read some of them from the grave!)
